How do I prepare my mix for mastering?

The most important part in preparing your mix for mastering is to make sure that the artist/band likes how it sounds. Once everyone signs off on the mix we can get more technical. Please make sure that:

  • You've taken any limiters off of the master bus.

  • There is a bit of headroom for me to work with. If the mix is peaking around -6db that is great, but as long as the peaks are below 0db I can work with it.

  • Check that the beginning and end of the mix sound right to you. I will adjust the fades as needed but it helps if you already have them how you want.

  • Please send any rough masters that you've made of the song.

  • Lastly, double check that you're sending the right mix!

What is the best way to send my mix files?

Feel free to attach your mix directly to an email and send it to me at sam@sidequestsound.com. If the file size is too big to attach it to an email you can use a file sharing site such as WeTransfer.com, just upload it there and email the link to me.

When and how does payment work for mastering?

You don't need to worry about payment until after you've signed off on the final master. I will send you a direct invoice which you can pay with a credit card.

What file types will I get when my project is mastered?

I will provide you with a .wav 44.1kHz 16-bit file which is still the standard for CD and most digital distributors. If you need any additional file types please ask!

I can provide 48kHz 24-bit, which is the standard for video (for use in any music videos.) I can also provide 96kHz 24-bit or 88.2kHz 24-bit for use with platforms such as TIDAL that offer higher quality streaming.
